How to Pronounce Arkansas Town Names (Without Getting Corrected at the Gas Station)

Arkansas has a lot of names that look one way and sound another. Blame the French, blame the Caddo and the Quapaw, blame 300 years of people spelling things however they felt that day.

If you grew up here, you already know these. If you didn’t, this list will save you.

Start with the state itself

• Arkansas — ARE-kan-saw
• Not like Kansas. Never like Kansas.
• Fun fact: the Arkansas River is pronounced ar-KAN-zus once it crosses into Kansas. They can have that one.

The most mispronounced word in the state

• Ouachita — WASH-uh-taw
• It’s a river, a lake, a mountain range, a county, and a university. You cannot avoid it.
• Not “oo-a-CHEE-ta.” Not “ow-a-SHEE-ta.” Weather reporters from out of state butcher it weekly and we all just sit there.

The counties that flat-out lie to you

• Nevada County — nuh-VAY-duh
• Nothing to do with Las Vegas. Say it wrong in Prescott and watch what happens.
• Lafayette County — luh-FAY-et
• Not the Louisiana way. Not the French way. The Arkansas way.

Names that hide a letter

• Humphrey — UMP-free. The H is silent and always has been.
• McGehee — muh-GHEE. Two syllables. Not three. Not “muh-GEE-hee.”
• Prescott — PRESS-cut. That last syllable barely exists. Get in, get out.

The ones outsiders get wrong every single time

• El Dorado — el durr-AY-doh. Not “el doh-RAH-doh.” This is south Arkansas, not a Cadillac.
• Monticello — mont-uh-SELL-oh. Jefferson may have said it with a “chel.” We don’t.
• Lonoke — LOW-noke
• Lavaca — luh-VA-kuh, with the “a” like in apple
• Petit Jean — Petty Jean. It’s spelled French. It is not said French.

The trap nobody warns you about

• Hot Springs is the city, with an S.
• Hot Spring County has no S.
• They’re different places. People who should know better mix these up on live television.

Why any of this matters

Because names are how a place tells you whether you’re from there.

Nobody’s going to run you out of town for saying Ouachita wrong. But the second you say it right, something shifts. You’re not a visitor anymore. You’re one of us.
